I’m sure many of you have noticed that in the last number of weeks Kilcock has been brimming with flowers and hanging baskets and is verging on being litter free. In case you didn’t know we’ve the Kilcock Tidy Towns to thank. The Tidy Towns is run by an extremely dedicated team of mostly retired individuals who have been taking care of flower boxes and hanging baskets and picking up litter (a lot of it) for many years. They mow edges, cut hedges, weed, trim bushes, tidy the round-a-bouts and plant flowers in public places through out the town. They do an amazing job – with the help of a few volunteers.

A big thank you also goes out to the Kilcock Business Association who donated all the hanging baskets you see over town. The Tidy Towns are keeping these watered and well looked after – a huge job in itself as they require watering every 2 days.

It’s easy to get caught up in complaining about some of the poorer aspects of our town – but don’t let this over shadow the fantastic work of Kilcock’s Tidy Town team.

Can you help?

Please consider helping out with Tidy Towns on either a regular or once off basis. Contact Tess Barrett 016287537 or Mary Nolan 0871300571.

It does take some effort but with a team of volunteer just doing a little here and there can make a huge difference. You can help by:

volunteering on a regular basis with the tidy towns team

contacting Tidy Towns to see if you could adopt a small flowerbed in the town to keep neat and tidy

simply pulling out weeds in some of the local flower beds (do get in touch with Tidy Towns for some guidance)

just pick up litter whenever you have an opportunity to do so – if you’re out walking the dog or pushing a pram take the opportunity to pick up some of the rubbish around your estate or roadside. It’s pretty shocking sometimes the amount of litter that you’ll find.

It’s going to be an extra special day for all the community – the annual parade will take place and directly following it will be a new event – The Kilcock Duck Race taking place directly after the parade in the Harbour.

Taking Part in the Parade

All businesses, sporting organisations and community groups are invited to take part in the parade – the theme of this year’s festival is “Our Kilcock” (blush!). The St Patrick’s Day committee and the Kilcock Business Association (who are presenting the Duck Race) are hoping the this year’s festival is the biggest and best in years. Business entries are €80 and club, school or voluntary groups are €40. If you haven’t been involved why not take part this year? There is a minimum of 2 cars per float and further details are can be downloaded: Kilcock St Patrick’s Day Information (PDF).

The parade starts 1.30pm on the 17th March. There are several prize categories for best entries and there is a presentation night in the Kilcock Gaa Club on Saturday 27th March 2010 at 9 pm where all prizes will be presented to all winners.

Volunteers Required

The St. Patrick’s Day committee meets on Monday nights at 8pm in the GAA club if you would like to go along and assist in preparations. The are also very much in need of volunteers to help with stewarding the parade and the Duck Race. Please get in contact with Michael Minogue, the Chairman on 087 3142292 if you can assist.

Stay tuned for more news on the Duck Race…

One of the main ideas behind the set up of www.ourkilcock.ie was that it would be open for a range of topics and contributors. Early on, Aisling Lawlor began sharing her delicious recipes for the readers of OurKilcock. We’ve also had many photographers pro’s and amateurs alike adding their Kilcock pics to the gallery section. Now we want to open up the scope more and get more of our Kilcock residents and business people to share their ideas, stories, articles and knowledge on a one-off or with a regular feature on the website blog. As always we are always very keen to know of any events that are happening around the town. As the website is run on a volunteer basis we can’t offer any financial reward – only the warm fuzzy feeling that you’ve contributed something to your local community

Some specific things we’re looking for are:
- weekly sports round up of local sporting fixtures etc.
- weekly review of newspapers featuring Kilcock
- perspectives from a Kilcock yummy mummy
- perspectives from a local school goer
- a feature every month or so on ‘Things to Do around Kilcock’
- reviews and photos of any local events
- short stories
- feature articles on your specialty that would be helpful, amusing, interesting for the local Kilcock community to read.

Please email hello@ourkilcock.ie or phone me on 01 610 3859 if you would like to get involved. Thanks for reading.

They rely on a small grant from the council, but mostly fundraising activities to provide the tools and gorgeous flower baskets and beds that we see popping up all over town – this weekend they’re collecting outside the church so pop by and give what you can to keep Kilcock looking great. The Tidy Town judges are due any day now….

Volunteering your Time

As you might imagine they’d get a lot more done if they had a few more volunteers to help out – so please consider volunteering with the Kilcock Tidy Towns crew on a Monday and Wednesday evening over the summer and keep Kilcock looking beautiful. Call Tess on 087 270 9333 if you’d like to help out.
